Young Huh
What inspired you to become a designer?
From a young age, I was pulled to do something creative and I felt this pull even after law school and my first job. I met a designer at a cocktail party and after only a few minutes of hearing about what he does, I truly felt my calling. Schooling and my first job in design really solidified this for me.
What is the best piece of design advice you would have ever given or received?
The best advice I’ve received comes in three parts: not to spend too much time looking left or right, but to focus straight ahead on my work, vision and dreams; to celebrate others, not compare myself to them; and to make sure I always find the time to do the parts of design I enjoy.
How would you describe your aesthetic?
We approach each project with classic principles and modern thinking while incorporating elevated materials and a mix of pattern and color. Our interiors are warm and welcoming with a touch of romance.
Complete the following sentence: When designing a family home, the most important thing to remember is...
to give equal weight to function and aesthetic.
What are your favorite tricks for a quick home refresh?
Change the finishing touches: throw blankets, pillows, objet. Have fun collecting items and accessories that move you. They needn’t all be displayed at once but can be rotated throughout the year or whenever you’re ready for a change.
Where do you like to start when putting together a room?
We always start with layout and mood: what will the space be used for? What would a day in this space look like? What mood, thought, or feeling do we want to evoke? What story are we telling?
What would you say to the novice when it comes to designing their home...someone who is overwhelmed by all the choices and styles?
Moodboarding or collaging is key. If furnishings don’t work together in a moodboard, they won’t work together in a room. Pinterest can be an extremely helpful tool.
