Jenni Kayne and her two oldest children at home

        Maisonette Muse: Jenni Kayne

LA-based designer Jenni Kayne is our latest Muse. This mama of two (and a third on the way) embodies laid-back yet elevated style, both with her timeless, classic clothing, as well as the thoughtful, curated way in which she lives her life. The Jenni Kayne philosophy encompasses everything from style to wellness to entertaining, and the brand has quietly grown a cult following over the last fifteen years. Today, Jenni presides over the ultimate California lifestyle brand.

What does an average morning in the Kayne/Ehrlich household look like?

I mean, are you kidding?! Crazy show. I'm not a morning person, so Richard tends to get the kids started on breakfast. He also usually brings me tea in bed. (Find someone who brings you tea in bed!) I'll get the kids dressed and ready for school, and there's a bit of a scramble for everyone to get out of the house—the kids clean the bunny cages and feed the dogs while Richard and I get ourselves ready for the day. It's a circus but somehow we all end up at school and work in one piece every day.

You’re known for your classic, relaxed style. What are some of the pieces you gravitate towards in your everyday life?

T-shirts, high-waisted jeans, and our mule slides. As a California girl, I love and rely on layering pieces like cashmere sweaters and button-down shirts.

Do you dress your minis to reflect that Jenni-Kayne-style?

I try to let my kids be kids but of course my style rubs off on them a bit. Their clothes tend to be more colorful versions of what I like or like to wear.

How has your style changed (if at all) since becoming a mother?

I have more of a uniform now. I know what I like and what I feel good wearing and I don't stray too far from it day to day. Of course, I love special things, but it isn't practical to try to reinvent the wheel every morning.

You were 19 years old when you launched your first collection – 15 years, 2 kids, and 5 stores later, Jenni Kayne has morphed into a total lifestyle brand. How much do you think having a family contributed to that?

A huge amount. As my personal life has evolved, and as I've gotten older and my interests have expanded beyond just fashion, my brand has evolved too. As a designer I draw inspiration from my personal experiences and interests so it's been a steady and natural evolution.

What are some of the ways your career has helped you to be a better mother? And some of the ways being a mother has helped you in your career?

My career allows me to be more patient because I appreciate the time I get with my kids. And the same applies to my career; I really focus when I'm at work so that my time is productive. I focus on the projects that really need me, instead of being a little bit involved in every single endeavor and decision.

What is one thing you wish you’d known before becoming a parent?

        The art of distraction.

Best parenting advice you ever received?

The importance of striving for balance. Self-care, quality time with kids, work, and your relationship with your partner are all important in their own way, and contribute to your overall quality of life—as well as your children’s.

Best lesson your own mother taught you?

It's a small world so be kind to everyone—and always write thank you notes

You epitomize California living – can you tell us where you’re spending your time these days?

Well, everyone has their own perfect version of LA. For me, it's restaurants like Malibu Farm Cafe,Gjusta, Croft Alley, MTN , and Pizzana . I love LACMA and the Hammer Museum ,Brentwood Country Mart for shopping, hiking in Westridge Trail and riding in Sullivan Canyon.

Describe your best weekend day with the family.

Probably some combination of all of the above. We also love to entertain and have fun in LA with other families—it's enjoyable for the kids and the adults.

        Family rituals?

One night a week we do breakfast for dinner, which we all love. It's easy and feels celebratory and fun. I also love doing girly things with Ripley like our "spa time" at bath time.

Wha t is a favorite new discovery that you can’t get enough of right now?

The matcha latte from Alfred’s on Melrose Place, and May Lindstrom's honey mud mask. It’s my go-to mask and leaves my skin with a post-facial glow.

You know you’ve been a good mama when…

My kids tell me how much they love me.

Lessons you want to instill in your children?

We try to teach them about integrity; the importance of honesty, kindness, and hard work. How to have an appreciation for nature and how to take care of our planet. How to be happy and have fun!

Hopes for the future of the Jenni Kayne brand?

To reach more women. To continue strengthening our current mix of items while also branching into other categories like home, candles, and handbags.

        Mantra/life motto:

        Less is more.
